[WINDOWS] Red Baron 3D Empty
PostSubject: [WINDOWS] Red Baron 3D   [WINDOWS] Red Baron 3D Icon_minitimeSat 24 Sep - 4:16

Hi there!
First of all sorry for my english as i'm not a native speaker.

Do you remember the time when planes were made of wood and canvas and men were made of steel?
Do you remember those wild dogfights above the trenches, those noxious spins at low altitude and those desperate head-on passes?

The name was Red baron 3D (RB3D) and it was a lot of fun at the beginning of this century.

10 years later simmers have forgotten the Old Lady, looking for more beautiful and more realistic.
But the new flight sims are quite demanding for the personnal computers and much time is needed to master them.
So maybe you're just like me, dreaming of crazy dogfights forgetting the damned fps criteria, maybe you dream of short but intense flight sessions dedicated to nothing but fight?
What do you think about just running after a Camel or an Albatross for a few minutes from time to time, without going through a long and boring period of apprenticeship?
If you're in, get up the old lady and join us!
The check-list before flight may involve an up-grade of the software but it will be for free and it's no big deal.

1) Preliminary notes:
a) Peripheral devices:
Let's face it, to play flight sims you definitively need a joystick. The best would be a "twisting" one as rudder is a very important control for those antic planes.
Of course if your joystick doesn't twist you could plug rudder pedals but configuring 2 peripheral devices may be uneasy. So yes, a twisting joystick is the best choice.
b) Download Red Baron 3D:
You know what? If you don't have a copy of RB3D you can download it plus Red Baron and Red Baron II for 10 US$ here:
http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/red_baron_pack

2) Up-grading the software:
Now it's time to up-grade you game to the version i propose: Red Baron 3D patch 1.0.7.8 with redux patch 1.6 gold.
Let's see how to get there:
Do first a back-up of your RB3D directory so that you could come back in case of misadventure. And then:
a) From Red Baron II:
Download the exe file named "Red Baron 3D 1.0.7.7 Super Patch" here:
http://acepage.beckament.net/rb3d.html
Launch the exe file
Go to step b)
b) From Red Baron 3D patch 1.0.7.7:
Download the exe file named "Red Baron 3D Update 1.0.7.8" here:
http://acepage.beckament.net/rb3d.html
Launch the exe file
Go to step c)
c) From Red Baron 3D patch 1.0.7.8:
Download the exe file named "RED BARON 3D - REDUX 1.6 Gold Patch" here:
http://redbaron3dofficialsite.com/downloads.php
Launch the exe file
That's it!
d) From Red Baron 3D patch 1.0.7.8 with redux patch prior to 1.6 gold:
Download the exe file named "RED BARON 3D - REDUX 1.6 Gold Patch" here:
http://redbaron3dofficialsite.com/downloads.php
Launch the exe file
That's it!

3) Downloading a voodoo board emulator if you don't have such a graphic board (highly probable), so that you 'll enjoy "better" graphics:
Download the zip file "OpenGLide_009rc7" here:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/openglide/
Unzip the file, copy and paste the files as told in the readme file included in the zip file.

4) Downloading utility programs so that you'll avoid the XP sound bug and you could use your trackir or your mouse to emulate a trackir:
a) Tviewmp for multiplayer purposes:
Download the zip file "TViewMP" here:
http://gabi-laser.blogspot.com/2011/03/red-baron-3d-utilities.html
Copy and paste the 2 files (exe + dll) in your main RB3D directory
b) Reload for offline purposes:
Download the zip file "ReLoad for Win2000+" here:
http://gabi-laser.blogspot.com/2011/03/red-baron-3d-utilities.html
Copy and paste the 3 files (html, exe + dll) in your main RB3D directory

5) Configuring your game to play online:
Check your "mplayer" flie located in your RB3D main directory, in the paragraph [MetaServers] you must find this line:
Server=TCP:216.18.240.30:6001 ; Redux

6) launchs:
a) For offline purposes, allways use Reload:
Clic on the "ReLoad" icon,
Check "XP sound fix", Mouse view (or TrackIR if you have one)
Check what ever you want for the other options
Clic on "start game"
b) For online purposes, allways use TVIEWMP:
Clic on the "TVIEWMP" icon,
Clic 6 times or more on the cross in the right upper corner
Create a pilot, connect and look for the right server (the mone we look for with our version of the game is the one start like "WWI-FM ISLAND-")
That's it, you're ready for the fight!

7) Solving your problems:
a) Slowing down the game: On recent PCs it is sometimes necessary to slow down the game otherwise it won't be playable.
Be careful those utilitaries reduce the speed of your processor (or something like that), don't forget to set the full speed after exiting RB3D to get back the performance of your computer.
- If you have the GOG version of the game you have an utilitary named "SetSpeed" in your main RB3D directory
- If you have another version of the game, download the utilitary namesd "winthrottle". Watch out it works for XP and Vista but for vista, who knows? It's here:
http://www.oldskool.org/pc/throttle
b) "Red Baron 3D First Aid Kit":
Download the file "Red Baron 3D First Aid Kit" here:
http://www.virtualaces.net/redbaron/redbaron.html
Read the readme file included in the download...
'Hope there will be a solution for your problem.
c) forum dedicated to RB3D:
The most active forum dealing with RB3D is here:
http://www.gog.com/en/forum/red_baron_pack/#1314072040
Read the posts and go and ask for help, some of those guys seem pretty experimented.

Cool Documentation:
There are many interesting pdfs about RB3D here:
http://www.wings-of-valor.net/files/files_docs.htm
Enjoy the reading!

9) Introduction to the flight:
Flying on those antic planes is something you have no ideas about?
Let's go for a ride:
Print the pdf named "rb3d_reference_card.pdf" to know the controls (see para 8 where you can fing thic document)
Launch the game through Reload (see para 6a)
Select "realism setting"
clic "realism option"
Check "flight model: authentic"
Clic ok
Select "main page" and "preferences"
Select "fly now setting"
Choose the plane named SE5a as it is one of the easiest plane to fly
Select "no enemies" in the window "new enemy activated"
Try to fly level, turn (bank: stick + rudder on the same side), roll, loop, dive and pull-out (be gentle to spare the plane)
Try stalls and spins and learn to get out of it
Try the landings (everywhere but the rivers, the trees, etc.) and takeoffs

10) Perfecting:
If you still think the game might be fun, go and look the videos of Requiem about Rise of Flight: They are dedicated to another flight sim but they are beautiful, well explained and the tips work for RB3D . It's here:
https://www.youtube.com/user/Requiem10NS
Have a special look on videos under "Air combat tactics" & "Air combat maneuvering"

That's it! You're ready to fight! 'hope you'll be hooked by this game as i've been!

Wanna see a video?

Not so bad for such an old lady in my humble opinion...

I need european people to wake up the old lady and populate the server so, who's in?
See you on the airfield!
[WINDOWS] Red Baron 3D Albatr12

Salute!
